Subject: Alinco DR130 Frequency Expansion

I once had my Alinco DJ160 converted to cover additional MARS frequencies.
I had this done by the Alinco representative at a hamfest. Does anyone know
for sure the procedure to convert a DR130 for same coverage? Is it just a
wore snip? Which one, and is there any other secrets needed to complete it?

THE FCC HAS RELEASED ITS REPORT AND ORDER IN PR DOCKET 93-85,
REGARDING MESSAGES RELAYED BY AMATEUR HIGH SPEED NETWORKS.  THE NEW
RULES, EFFECTIVE JUNE 1, 1&94, WILL ESTABLISH WHAT THE FCC CALLS ''A
COMPLIANCE POLICY FOR AMATEUR STATIONS PARTICIPATING IN AUTOMATIC
MESSAGE-FORWARDING SYSTEMS.''

THE NEW RULES RELIEVE MOST STATION OPERATORS IN SUCH NETWORKS OF
RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE CONTENT OF THE MESSAGES RELAYED BY THEIR
STATIONS.  UNDER CURRENT RULES, ALL LICENSEES IN A CHAIN OF
FORWARDING STATIONS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR MESSAGE CONTENT.

ORIGINATORS OF MESSAGES CONTINUE TO BE RESPONSIBLE, AND THE FIRST

The MIT Radio Exam Team  will conduct exams for the General
Radiotelephone Operators License, the Marine Radio Operators
Permit and the Global Marine Distress and Safety Systems
Maintainer Licenses.  The exams will be held at   1PM   Saturday May
7th at the Hosstraders Fleamarket in Rochester NH. and at   10AM
Saturday May 14th in Cambridge MA at 77 Mass Ave in MIT Room 1-150.

The Hosstraders Flea is a very large amateur radio event
held twice a year at the Rochester NH fairground located on
Rt 202 just east of Rt 16 exit 13.

A regular schedule of exams is planned for Cambridge MA on the
second Saturday of odd numbered months.  For more information call
Nick at 617 253 3776  (9-5).

There is a $35 examination fee.  Bring the ** original ** and a
copy of any commercial license or proof of passing certificates
you want to claim credit for.    Also bring 2 forms of picture
ID, a black pen and a pencil.

** If you are thinking of getting a commercial licence
   now may be the time.  The FCC is talking about imposing
   an additional "regulatory fee" after July 1.  This will
   probably be $105 - ouch- for GROL applicants.  Since
   the GROL is a lifetime license getting it now avoids
   the fee.

Copies of the question pools are available from the
Government Printing office or from W5YI at 1 800 669 9594.
This is probably the best study guide available for the
moment. A few copies are available for pickup in Cambridge.

The General Radio Telephone Operators License is required to
service transmitters in the aviation, maritime and international
radio services.  A Maritime Radio Operators Permit is required to
operate radiotelephone stations aboard large ships and certain
aviation and coast stations.

At a later date exams will be available for the Commercial Radio
Telegraph operators licenses and the Global Maritime Distress and
Safety Systems Operator (GMDSS-O) licenses.  Amateur Extra
Class operators may be particularly interested in obtaining
a commercial telegraph license as they will receive credit
for the 20 WPM 2nd class code exam.

The MIT Radio Exam Team operates under the auspices of the
National Radio Examiners COLEM, part of the W5YI group.

brought this to my attention.  This should be of intrest to the
amateur community as well as the scanner enthusiast.  Even if you do

Legislature and the Governor, voicing your opposition to this bill.

I, too, got tired of cleaning the shack so I made a few K$ sacrifice to the
radio gods for a new rig.  It helped!  I had a short chat last night with a
VP2.  At least he was outside of the U.S.  :-(

Question: What would be the best band for communication inside of caves.

I have done much research on the subject of underground communications and
have written several papers, and designed handheld and base station
equipment specifically for communicating in mines and caves.  The best
frequency, after many years of measuring propagation in tunnels is in the
range of 300 to 1500 kilohertz--yes kilohertz.  The secret is both the
frequency and the antenna.  The antenna must be a current loop so that the
radiated signal couples into the host rock or better yet couples into a
passive wire extending the length of the tunnel.  Without the wire, at
these Medium Frequencies (MF), you can expect to communicate about 1000 to
2000 feet with a power level of 10 watts.  With the wire I have
communicated several miles.  I have used both SSB and FM.
FM has an advantage if one of the stations has a noisy receive location.

Direct communication from underground to the surface can be easily done by
keying a CW audio frequency  (1700 Hz) into a large loop antenna and
receiving with a loop antenna fed into a tuned audio amplifier.  Great, if
there is no power line noise!  That can be with by a DSP filter.
Voice can be used on the downlink (hundreds of watts if you need to go
deep) but because you can't carry a big enough battery, the uplink is
uaually CW.

The other possibility is UHF/VHF.  However, in most cases, you can throw
the radio further than you can communicate.  The actual distance depends
on both the electrical characteristics of the rock (permeability and
permittivity) and the cross sectional dimensions of the tunnel.  The
bigger the better. Communicating around large fallen rocks and
constrictions is a problem.  Side tunnels tend to act as shorted or open
stubs and attenuate the signal.  Leaky coax cables, with or without
repeaters are often installed in the tunnels to make the communications
system independent of the many variables.  Sometimes frequencies that you
don't think will work, do work.  For example, CB works good in European
salt mines but not well in the USA.

Well, while we're at it, BSB stands for Broadcast Services for the Blind.
And since subcarrier services are not directly accessible to the public,
eavesdropping on them is a violation of the ECPA. Get the proper
(registered) receiver.

In the last two weeks, I've sorted out boxes and boxes of old papers in the
basement, got a good start on a power supply for my 2M kilowatt, cleaned
& reorganized the radio room (twice!), cleaned the kitchen (no small task...),
and all of these good deeds have been rewarded with...
